The fecal occult blood test (IFOB) is a lab test used to check stool samples for hidden (occult) blood. If blood is detected through a fecal occult blood test, additional tests may be needed to determine the source of the bleeding.

Gastrointestinal diseases may cause occult blood in stools. In the early stages, gastrointestinal problems such as colon cancer, ulcers, polyps, colitis, diverticulitis, and anal fissures may not show any visible symptoms, only occult blood.
